Other diagnostic tests may include a bacterium that grows in the gallbladder, a blood test to rule out other underlying health conditions, and a small procedure called cholecystoscopy, where a doctor uses a camera and a sterile tool to inspect and remove the gallstones. Treatment typically involves using medications to help dissolve the gallstones, which may be done in the office or as an outpatient procedure. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the gallstones. Lifestyle changes such as a diet low in fat and cholesterol, quitting smoking, and drinking plenty of water may also help prevent the formation of gallstones.
