CYP27C1 Enzyme Metabolizes Many Drugs
CYP27C1, also known as CYP27C9 or CYP27C19, is a cytochrome P450 enzyme that is primarily located in the liver and other organs. It is involved in the metabolism of a wide variety of drugs, including many statins, antidepressants, and opioids.

The primary function of CYP27C1 is to metabolize drugs that are taken to treat various health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and mental illness. It is also involved in the synthesis of some drugs that are used for non-pharmacological purposes, such as pain relief and anti-inflammatory effects.
CYP27C1 is a potent metabolite of many drugs, including statins, antidepressants, and opioids. It is known to have a high affinity for these drugs and is often used as a marker for their metabolism.
Studies have shown that individuals with certain genetic variations in the CYP27C1 gene are more likely to have altered levels of CYP27C1 and may be more susceptible to the effects of these drugs. These genetic variations include the VKORC1 and CYP27C9/*4/*8/*9/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*12/*13/*14/*15/*16/*17/*8/*18/*6/*11/*19/*2/*3/*10/*1
Protein Name: Cytochrome P450 Family 27 Subfamily C Member 1
Functions: A cytochrome P450 monooxygenase that catalyzes the 3,4 desaturation of all-trans-retinol (also called vitamin A1) to all-trans-3,4-didehydroretinol (also called vitamin A2) in the skin. Desaturates with lower efficiency all-trans retinal and all-trans retinoic acid. Forms minor amounts of 3-hydroxy and 4-hydroxy all-trans-retinol derivatives. Mechanistically, uses molecular oxygen inserting one oxygen atom into a substrate and reducing the second into a water molecule. Two electrons are provided by NADPH via a two-protein mitochondrial transfer system comprising flavoprotein FDXR (adrenodoxin/ferredoxin reductase) and nonheme iron-sulfur protein FDX1 or FDX2 (adrenodoxin/ferredoxin)
